The New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) offers exciting internship programs for high school and college students.

SCA’s High School Summer Internship Program

The SCA Summer Internship Program (SIP) recruits talented NYC public high school students for a six week paid internship with various SCA departments and SCA business partners throughout New York City. SIP is designed to expose students to careers in various industries including but not limited to architecture, engineering, construction management, information technology, business, legal, real estate, and public administration. The program provides interns with a diverse internship experience along with career mentoring.  Students spend four days a week with their intern host and the remaining day attending educational programming. Assignments will vary depending on company or department and the student’s skill set. The internship is an in person position and the standard hours for the program are 9:00 am-4:00 pm Monday through Friday. A 10 hour OSHA construction safety and health course will be provided for students whose internships may include a visit to one or more construction sites. Students who are under the age of 18 will be required to submit a signed parent consent form prior to participating in such visits.

Program Highlights:

  • Students receive career exposure and mentoring. 
  • Students participate in various workshops and panel discussions. Training may include a design challenge and tour of a SCA construction site.
  • Students are able to network with industry professionals, interns and staff members. 
  • Students are paid $15 an hour for 30 hours a week during the six week internship.
  • Students are assigned a college supervisor who monitors their internship to ensure that it is proceeding properly.

Eligibility:

  • The program is open to New York City public high school students.
  • G.P.A. will be considered.
  • Students must be available for the program’s six week duration.
  • Applicants who are selected must be able to provide original unexpired documentation to show their identity and employment authorization to work in the United States as well as age-appropriate working papers (for those born after July 10, 2005), and
  • If selected, applicants must provide original proof of being fully vaccinated with an approved COVID-19 vaccine before their start date.

Students selected for SIP must present one item from Column A OR One item from Column B AND One item from Column C outlined on the attached document.

Application Process: Applications and required documents must be received by March 6, 2023

  • Click the Applicant Login or copy and paste the link below into a browser address bar and complete the online application. The application will be available from January 4h -March 6th. Click the Application Guide link for instructions on how to complete and submit the online application. 
    • Upload a current resume to the online application.
    • Upload a complete official high school transcript, as a pdf document, to the online application or ask your school counselor to send the document to SIP by email to SCAINTERNSHIPS.
    • Click on the SIP Recommendation Form below. Ask a teacher or guidance counselor to complete and submit the recommendation form directly to SIP electronically. 
  • Students will be notified by email of the selection decisions for the interview process by March 24th.  Interviews will be held during the NYC DOE Spring Break from April 10th -14th, 2023. Students selected to interview will receive a Doodle Poll invite asking them to select an interview appointment. 
  • Students who complete the interview process will be notified of the selection decisions for the program by April 28th. 
  • Students selected for SIP will receive a SCA employment packet by email. They will need to submit a copy of their completed employment packet, along with a copy of their age-appropriate working papers (for those born after July 10, 2005), proof of identity and work authorization, and a copy of their COVID-19 vaccination card to SIP by May 5th. 
  • Students will be required to present original documents to the SCA’s Human Resources department on or before the program start date.

SCA's College Internship Program

The SCA's College Internship Program was established to attract and recruit talented college students interested in architecture and or engineering design, construction management, information technology, accounting, business management, human resources, legal, public administration, and other careers within the public sector.

Program Highlights:

  • Students receive progressively challenging work assignments and career mentoring.
  • Students may intern up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, and up to 37.5 hours per week during the summer (from June through August).
  • Students are paid $18.00 per hour.

Eligibility:

  • The program is open to full-time college students enrolled in an accredited four-year bachelor’s degree program or in graduate degree program. 
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills are important.
  • Should be proficient in computer programs that are relevant for the intern host area.
  • G.P.A. will be considered 
  • Applicants who are selected must be able to present original unexpired documentation to show their identity, and employment authorization to work in the United States.
  • If selected, applicants must provide original proof of being fully vaccinated with an approved COVID-19 vaccine before their start date.

The SCA has developed and launched the Opportunity Academy (OA) a workforce development and small business initiative. OA was developed to complement the training and experience derived from the SCA’s various business development programs. OA is offered by the SCA in collaboration with LaGuardia Community College’s Adult and Continuing Education Division (ACE). OA’s pilot program began in 2016 with 30 participants. OA is a culturally and ethnically diverse group ranging in age from 19 to 50+. OA continues to train hopefuls of all ages seeking entry into the construction industry as back-office support.

Program Objective

To assist minority, woman owned and locally based business enterprises (MWLBE) enrolled in the SCA’s Mentor programs in their back office operations including the various submissions (i.e. bid documentation, requests for payments, project schedules, change orders, close-out documents, etc.) required by the SCA and New York City agencies.  
The development of a workforce with transferrable job skills that enable them to compete as business development professionals trained in the proper preparation and submission of documentation in various aspects of local government contracting.

Initiative

Participants are selected to participate in an 18 week paid training program led by public construction and procurement professionals currently working with the SCA and other New York City public agencies
Successful participants are assigned to work as paid interns with SCA Mentor and Mentor Graduate firms and various departments within the SCA for up to 36 weeks. Interns may work for 20 hours per week, with the potential for full-time hours during our peak season.

Training Method

Training modules focus on business development, procurement, construction contracting, and back office support, specifically related to public construction project management.
Participants learn about the requirements for conducting business with the SCA and New York City agencies.  These areas include the procurement process, labor law compliance, and the submissions required during each phase of public construction, from notice to proceed to project close out.

Program Requirements

OA participants must have:  
    • High school diploma or equivalent 
    • Authorization to work in the United States
    • Proficiency in English and strong communication skills 
    • One year minimum of work experience (preferably in an office or customer service setting)
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite 
    • Participants must be available to attend training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00-5:00p.m. 
    • Participants must be available for internship placement for a minimum of 20 hours per week. Full time hours may be available during the summer.
